Disposable Powder-Free Examination Gloves

Disposable gloves are useful for various applications across industries. They provide protection for staff, patients, customers, and products. Selecting the right glove for your intended application is an important part of creating a safe environment for everyone involved. When selecting your new gloves, you’ll need to determine whether you need powdered or powder-free versions.

What’s The Difference Between Powdered and Powder-Free Gloves?

Powdered gloves use a fine powder dusting to aid users in quickly donning and removing their gloves. This powder — usually made of cornstarch — smooths the surface of the rubber, reduces surface friction and keeps the gloves from sticking to themselves. In situations where employees are required to quickly remove and change gloves, having the help of powder makes the process much easier.

Some powder-free alternatives are manufactured using powder on the molds, but the final products are completely powder-free thanks to a chlorination process. During the chlorination process, gloves are treated with a chlorine solution, rinsed and dried. This process helps to remove the powder and reduce the surface tackiness of the gloves.

Other powder-free gloves are made without using any powder or chlorination. Instead, the insides of these gloves are coated with a polymer layer that reduces surface friction and makes the gloves easier to put on and remove.

Powdered and powder-free gloves are available in a variety of materials to suit your needs. At SUNLINE Supply, we carry both powder-free vinyl gloves and powder-free nitrile gloves as well as powder-free thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) gloves.

What Are The Advantages of Powder-Free Gloves?

Powder-free gloves are often considered a safer alternative to powdered options. When the powder is used in latex gloves, it can increase the wearers’ risk for an allergic reaction as it sticks to their hands. The powder is released into the hair when the gloves are donned, which can lead to respiratory allergy reactions in both users and anyone else present.

While the powder from non-latex glove alternatives like nitrile and vinyl doesn’t cause allergic reactions, it poses other potential risks, including airway inflammation and, in a medical environment, wound inflammation and post-surgical adhesions. In fact, powdered gloves pose enough of a risk to patients that the FDA banned the use of powdered medical gloves in 2016.

For non-medical applications, powder-free gloves are often preferred because powder can be messy and contaminate finished products. For example, those in the food industry prefer powder-free gloves because it prevents food contamination that could occur when the powder is released in the air.
